RCA Vehicle Design Show 2001

The Royal College of Art recently held its annual show of students work. Particularly interesting was the work of the students on the vehicle design course. The course has traditionally been the platform for some of the World's best vehicle designers to step from into prominent industry positions. Former students have infiltrated almost every major manufacturer and consultancy in the World.

The course is two-year post-graduate, with many students being sponsored through what is often an expensive and work-intensive time. Final projects this year ranged from sporty off-roaders through to advanced Audi people carriers and luxury sports cars. The vehicle design course does not deal exclusively with automobiles and other projects included catamarans and motorcycles.

Quality of supporting illustrations was very high, as expected, and every model showed a great level of time and commitment. The show was open for a period of a week or so when industry and public had a chance to look round. Unfortunately, we understand that US manufacturers did not express a great interest in the show which seems a little wasteful given the course's reputation. However, many students already have strong links with manufacturers and consultancies - particularly in Europe - and look set to move into prominent design roles.

All the work was of a very high standard with partcularly notable projects from Sung-Jin Yong, Andrew Woodman with an innovative 'All Terrain Racer' concept and Jorge Diez-Perez with the radical Audi people carrier.
